Artist statement

Barnaby paints what he sees, and he sees in colour first. Neon green and orange against deep indigo. Tropical foliage in colours no jungle has. He is ten years old and the work is serious.

Fauvist painting is the nearest reference point: colour carries the feeling instead of describing the world. His subjects are animals and nature, a frog in tropical foliage, a jellyfish drifting underwater, two leopards on indigo, but the subject is where the painting starts, not where it ends. The brushwork is expressive, the line confident, the palette non-naturalistic.

He says little about the work. The paintings say the rest.

He works in acrylic and in collage. The Face draws on the visual traditions of tribal art. The Bouquet shows the influence of Frida Kahlo. The Bus, an autumn London street with a red double-decker and Big Ben, is his first cityscape.

The work is bold, abstract and painterly, and it stands on that.

Every product in this shop starts with one of his original paintings.
